GE Global R&D Center recently announced a new research effort to perform complex calculations with high-performance computers. GE is working with Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico, USA to focus on wind turbine noise prediction. Modern high-powered grid-connected fans, whose main noise is derived from blade noise caused by aerodynamics, have also become the biggest limiting factor in the design of wind turbines. Reducing blade noise helps reduce wind power costs and increase power generation. In fact, GE predicts that rotor noise will be reduced by 1 decibel, and each wind turbine will generate 2% more electricity per year. It is estimated that nearly 240 GW will be added to the world in the next five years. If the power generation is increased by 2%, it will produce 5 GW of additional electricity, enough to provide electricity to all residents of New York, Boston and Los Angeles.
To ensure that the designed fan blades are free of noise problems, GE researchers performed acoustic measurements of the fan blades in the wind tunnel, field measurements to determine acceptable noise levels, and set the noise reduction mode of operation in the control system.
“The biggest limitation in wind turbine blade design comes from aerodynamic noise,†said Mark Jon Khof, head of the wind energy technology platform at GE Global R&D Center. “We can build an engineering model that uses current high performance calculations to predict blade noise. A rotor with a higher tip speed and lower noise is used to increase power generation. This not only saves consumers energy costs, but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions."
