Not only is steel increasingly used to make parts such as pistons, it can also be used to make piston rings. The obvious trend in using steel as a piston ring material began in heavy duty applications. It is applied not only to the first sealing ring but also to the second and third rings.
The first seal ring is made of nitrided stainless steel. The piston ring running surface facing the cylinder wall is coated with a highly wear-resistant coating, which is also of great value in terms of the anti-tension cylinder. The coating, the so-called PVD (physical vapor deposition) layer, is deposited in a high vacuum (see Figure 1) and consists of CrN (chromium nitride) with a hardness of up to 1600 HV 0.050.
