Scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory have unexpectedly discovered ways to convert carbon dioxide into ethanol fuel so that we can convert this greenhouse gas into useful fuel resources. This electrochemical reaction requires a small amount of carbon and copper, and it also requires nitrogen and applied voltage to participate in the reaction. Adam Rondinone, the lead author of this latest scientific article, said that this result was discovered by chance.
This chemical reaction is extremely complex and it completely reverses the combustion process. Rondinone said: “This is the conversion of the waste generated from the combustion reaction, carbon dioxide, into useful fuel. It is simply incredible because it is very difficult to directly convert carbon dioxide into ethanol with just one catalyst.â€
This reaction did not use the very expensive and rare platinum as a catalyst, but copper that only requires nano-texturing. In addition, the reaction conditions are very simple and the reaction can take place in water at room temperature. Scientists believe that this technology can be used for large-scale industrial production, and the performance and reaction activities of the catalyst have yet to be studied.
