The corn developed by China International Research Platform is ripe

In the summer season, the first season fresh corn developed by CIMMYT-China Special Corn Research Center is ripe. Recently, the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences held the 2018 Fresh Corn New Variety Promotion Conference, which aims to accelerate the demonstration and promotion of fresh corn new varieties and show the series of results achieved since the establishment of CIMMYT-China Special Corn Research Center.

CIMMYT-China Special Maize Research Center was established on March 20 this year. It is an international scientific research platform jointly established by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Shanghai has the advantages of technological innovation in the field of special corn, and CIMMYT has the advantage of a global collaborative network. Therefore, the platform is praised by the industry as the result of a strong joint effort, which will effectively enhance the global radiation and influence of Shanghai special corn research. Support and lead the international special corn research and industrial development. The research center mainly takes sweet corn, waxy corn and popcorn as research objects, and uses genomics, quantitative genetics, molecular genetics and other technical means to mine and breed important agronomic traits or genes. At the conference of the introduction of new varieties of fresh corn, CIMMYT-China Special Corn Research Center and Shanghai Fresh Corn Industrial Technology System jointly launched 18 new sweet waxy corn varieties, Shenketian No. 2 sweet corn and Shenkenuo No. 1 and Shenke Nuo 602 waxy corn were the main varieties.

According to Zheng Hongjian, deputy director of CIMMYT-China Special Maize Research Center, in 2018, CIMMYT-China Special Maize Research Center planted more than 3500 copies of various types of maize breeding, genetics and variety materials, including germplasm resource nursery, new combination identification area, New variety display area, cultivation and genetic experiment area. The fresh corn for the participants to taste is the sweet and waxy corn planted in the first season of the center.

It is also understood that CIMMYT-China Special Corn Research Center was established 100 days ago, not only harvested the first season fresh corn, but also harvested the following results:

First, on April 21, the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences, together with 11 scientific research and enterprise units in the southeast region of China, jointly established the Shenkeyu (Southeast District) Fresh Corn Variety Test Consortium.

Second, on May 2, after the establishment of the center, the first CIMMYT senior scientist Daniel Jeffers who entered the center to carry out cooperative research came to Shanghai to carry out breeding and scientific research on special corn stalk rot resistance and ear rot disease. At work, on May 15, researcher Xu Yunbi, a senior scientist at CIMMYT, entered the center to carry out cooperative research.

Third, the new sweet and waxy corn varieties cultivated by the center were planted in countries along the “Belt and Road” such as Thailand, Malaysia and Tanzania, and conducted international testing and evaluation, with a view to identifying and screening sweet and waxy corn hybrids suitable for these national ecosystems The center's popularity and influence will promote agricultural cooperation among countries along the “Belt and Road”.

As an international scientific research platform, CIMMYT-China Special Maize Research Center focuses on strengthening academic interaction and cooperation. In just over three months, there have been no less than five important academic exchange activities. For example, on April 8, Researcher Tan Qi, Vice President of Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Director of CIMMYT-China Special Maize Research Center and his party went to Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences and CIM? MYT Yunnan Experimental Base to make visits and exchanges. Immediately after April 10th, CIMMYT-China Special Maize Research Center invited Professor Chen Shaojiang from China Agricultural University and National Corn Improvement Center to conduct academic exchanges and did an academic titled "Maize Haploid Technology and Engineering Breeding Application" report.
