According to reports, the main component of agricultural and forestry wastes-lignocellulose, which constitutes plant cell walls, is a rich renewable resource with low raw material costs and a wide range of sources. The researchers used a two-step method to efficiently convert lignocellulose into 2,5-hexanedione and convert the latter into a polycyclic alkane fuel with a branched structure. The carbon yield in both steps is above 70%, and this fuel has the characteristics of high density and low freezing point.
Studies have shown that this fuel can be used alone as a high-density advanced aviation fuel or as a fuel additive to increase the volumetric heating value of aviation kerosene. Li Ning, a researcher at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that this fuel comes from biomass and has a higher volume calorific value than traditional jet fuel. Using this high-density jet fuel can significantly increase the range and load of the aircraft under the same fuel tank capacity. Helps reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
