V. Porshyn pointed out in this study that the use of a nanosecond pulsed laser to illuminate the bottom of a diamond needle of 100 μm length can significantly enhance the electron emission at the top of the diamond needle. This new technology for controlling electron emission using an illumination beam will be used in the future or for portable X-ray sources, electron microscopes and sensors.
Porshyn said: Our research shows how energy and charge work inside the diamond needle. At the same time, the light-induced diamond needle can also emit the electron beam of the pico coulomb in nanoseconds. The current observed in the experiment is sufficient to drive a miniature portable X-ray source device; ideally, the X-ray source device can be as small as a pen.
The fact that diamonds can emit electrons is surprising, as in general large blocks of diamond are electrically insulating. The study found that the diamond needle had a little conductivity at room temperature even without exposure to the beam. In this regard, the researchers attributed it to material defects.
When the worker used a nanosecond pulsed laser to illuminate the bottom of the diamond needle, the electrons at the top of the needle were significantly enhanced. This shows that there is some sort of long-distance transfer mechanism for diamond needles along the length of 100 μm.
Researchers believe that electrons and holes in bound states, also known as excitons, provide this potential transport mechanism. The excitons are activated by the laser energy and travel along the diamond needle. Among them, some excitons are ionized by an electric field and generate "hot electrons", which are emitted through the tip of the needle.
Scientists predict that this electron-emitting diamond needle will provide potential advantages for many devices in the future.
Porshyn said: According to X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, the X-ray source of the diamond needle can be used to explore the properties of unknown materials. This diamond needle can also be used as a sensor to monitor the beam.
Next, the researchers will heat the diamond needle to improve its photoreaction; it will also test the triode device, which is mainly used in X-ray source equipment. ( Compile: China Superhard Materials Network )
