KÖKSAN is a comprehensive manufacturer of resins and various PET packaging products. The company has been using Nordson Corporation's standard BKGPOLY screen changer, and its large filtration area is designed for high volume polymerization.
BKGPOLY screen changer
The unit has eight filter chambers, each containing a flat screen supported by a perforated plate. In the retrofit implementation for KÖKSAN, Nordson replaced these screens and perforated plates with newly designed perforated plates, each supporting multiple filter wicks. This increases the filtration area by a factor of ten and improves filtration accuracy compared to flat screens.
The result is increased efficiency, significantly longer filter life; minimizes the occurrence of dark spots and gels; and significantly reduces the pressure differential of lower shear stress on the polymer.

Nordson's custom-built BKGPOLY screen changer also enables KÖKSAN to tightly control the quality of the company's original resin used in the manufacture of food and beverage containers, Mr. Thomas pointed out. “This is especially important for the production of preforms where gel and molding stress can cause defects and waste in the parts.â€
Multiwell plate with filter wick
Nordson's filter wicks are tubular components that are mounted parallel to the direction of melt flow. The melt enters the filter candle through the filter bag and is directed to the core of the filter candle and then appears downstream. The filter candle is used on the screen changer to increase the filter area, but it does not increase the size of the machine or affect the production capacity. This design in turn reduces the pressure loss and residence time of the melt. Filter wicks come in a variety of sizes and filtration accuracy.
Screen changers with filter wicks can still be used with standard screens and multi-well plates. This provides another advantage: the flat screen can be used as the most economical filtration method during the start-up process or after shutdown, until the specified material quality is achieved during the polymerization process, and the filter wick is used for further production to ensure optimal performance. In the BKGPOLY filtration system, there are four filter chambers on each of the two plungers to divide the melt flow into eight flow channels. When the pressure difference between the upstream and downstream sides of the filter element reaches a specified level, a signal is sent to replace the filter element. Although one of the plungers removes the two filter chambers during the replacement of the filter element, the melt flow continues uninterrupted through the other six chambers. Therefore, production can be continued during the replacement of the filter element without the use of any additional valves or devices.
