The indium industry is known as the "sunrise industry in the information age." Indium metal is widely used in the electronics industry, aerospace, alloy manufacturing, solar cell new materials and other high-tech fields, and has a strategic position in the electronics, telecommunications, optoelectronics, defense, communications and other fields. With the development of these fields, especially the rapid growth of the flat panel display industry, the indium industry has broad prospects and is playing an increasingly important role in the national economy.
Indium is used primarily as a cladding layer or alloyed with other metals to enhance corrosion resistance; indium is reflective and can be used to fabricate mirrors; indium alloys can be used as reactor control rods; and indium and indium compounds are used in radio and semiconductor technologies. There are also important uses. Before 1970, indium was basically used in laboratories. Now, it is used to make liquid crystal glass. It is an indispensable material for manufacturing liquid crystal displays and mobile phone screens. In addition, the addition of a small amount of indium increases the service life of alloy bearings by 4 to 5 times. Indium ingots are mainly used in the ITO industry. This use is the main consumption field of indium ingots and accounts for 84% of global indium consumption. Indium 70% is used to make Indium Tin Oxide targets (ITO), and ITO is used to make liquid crystal displays (LCDs), so indium is the most important material for manufacturing liquid crystal displays (LCDs).
From 2000 to 2006, the world's consumption of indium increased by an average of 14.4% annually, and in 2006 it was 1,056 tons. Due to the rapid development of the global LCD, the demand for indium has increased rapidly. In 2007, the global demand for indium exceeded 400 tons, but the actual supply was less than 300 tons, and the production of reclaimed indium was only about 30 tons. Ind With a demand of 568 tons and a supply of less than 400 tons, the gap between supply and demand continues to expand. It is estimated that the average annual increase from 2008 to 2010 will be 17.2%, and it will reach 1995 tons in 2010.
In the future, coated glass will still be the largest use of indium, and alkaline zinc-manganese batteries and photovoltaic cells will be the main growth areas.
