Safe use of calcium carbide

Calcium carbide is a dangerous goods that burns with water

Calcium carbide chemical name is calcium carbide, the appearance of gray, brownish yellow, black or brown block solids, is the basic raw material of the organic synthetic chemical industry. Its explosion hazard is mainly manifested in the water burning and the impurities in the calcium carbide are prone to sparks and become the ignition source. Calcium carbide itself does not have combustion properties, but it is easy to combine with water to form acetylene and release a lot of heat, which may cause acetylene to explode. Therefore, calcium carbide is a dangerous goods that burns in the water.

Calcium carbide is one of the basic raw materials for the organic synthetic chemical industry. It is an important raw material for acetylene chemical industry. Acetylene made from calcium carbide is widely used in metal welding and cutting.

Safe use of calcium carbide

(1) Transportation, storage, crushing, calcium carbide chambers (libraries) and slag pits of calcium carbide shall be carried out in accordance with the provisions of TJ31.

(2) The barreled calcium carbide should be stored in a room with dry ground, air circulation and no rain leakage. The ground should be higher than the road surface to avoid water ingress.

(3) It is forbidden to use the rolling method to load and unload and transport the calcium carbide barrel so as to avoid the spark of the collision between the calcium carbide and the barrel wall.

(4) After taking the calcium carbide, cover the lid.

(5) It is forbidden to hit the calcium carbide with a hammer in the acetylene generator room or the calcium carbide chamber.

(6) Powdered, ultra-small size calcium carbide should be specially responsible for the slag pits in batches, completely decomposed with water for proper disposal.

(7) The upper part of the calcium carbide slag pit shall be open, and the mortar and gray water in the slag pit shall not be discharged into the dark trench. When the slag is discharged, the iron tool and the device should be prevented from colliding to generate a partial spark.

(8) When the mixed gas of calcium carbide and acetylene is on fire, it should be extinguished with dry sand, carbon dioxide or dry powder fire extinguisher. It is forbidden to use water or foam fire extinguisher and carbon tetrachloride fire extinguisher.
