VDW expects German machine tool demand to return to a lower level

On October 6, 2009, the European Machine Tool Show (EMO) was held in Milan, Italy. At this time, the German machine tool industry was suffering from the severe impact of the world financial and economic crisis. Martin Welcker, president of the German Machine Tool Manufacturers Association (VDW), said at the EMO, "In recent years, the German machine tool industry has maintained a prosperous development trend, but in the first half of 2009, all relevant statistical indicators have plummeted."
In the first half of 2009, German machine tool orders decreased by 67%, and both production and exports fell by one-fifth. The only bright spot is the export situation to China. In recent years, China has been the largest export market for German machine tools. In July, the capacity utilization rate of German machine tools has dropped to a record low of 65.9%. The number of machine tools also fell from the peak in October 2008 to 70,500 in the first half of 2009, a decrease of 3,000 in these months. VDW expects German machine tool production to fall by 40% in 2009.
Despite this, VDW believes that the current signs of improvement are multifaceted and the industry will gradually improve in 2010. This expectation is mainly due to the optimistic market in Asia and South America. Especially in China and India, the impact of investment is small, and economists expect the market in the region to be positive in 2010.
At EMO in Milan, the German machine tool industry showed its activities related to energy saving in the machine tool industry. The theme was “Blue Competitiveness – Active Focus on Energy and Environment”. “Blue competitiveness” reflects the sustainable development thinking of industrial production.
