Overview of CNC tool material types

CNC tools are tools used in machining in machining, also known as cutting tools. The generalized cutting tools include both tools and grinding tools. In addition to the cutting blades, the “CNC tools” also include accessories such as tool holders and holders!

The development of machine tools and tools complements each other and promotes each other. The tool is the most active factor in the cutting process system consisting of machine tools, tools and workpieces. The cutting performance of the tool depends on the material of the tool and the tool structure. The high and low machining costs of cutting productivity and tool life, the machining accuracy and the quality of the machined surface are largely determined by the reasonable choice of tool material, tool structure and cutting parameters. In recent decades, the most basic tool materials for cutting have been rapidly developed, and the structural form of the tool has been greatly enriched.

CNC tool main material types

(1) Superhard tool

The so-called superhard material refers to synthetic diamond and cubic boron nitride (CBN for short), and polycrystalline diamond (PCD) and polycrystalline cubic nitride shed (PCBN) which are sintered by using these powders and a binder. Superhard materials have excellent wear resistance and are mainly used for high speed cutting and machining of difficult-to-cut materials.

(2) Ceramic knives

Ceramic knives have high hardness, wear resistance and good high temperature mechanical properties. They have low affinity with metals, are not easy to bond with metals, and have good chemical stability. Ceramic knives are mainly used in the cutting of steel, cast iron and its alloys and difficult-to-machine materials. They can be used for ultra-high-speed cutting, high-speed cutting and hard material cutting.

(3) Coating tool

Since the advent of tool coating technology, it has played an important role in improving tool performance and processing technology. After coating technology applied a layer of film to traditional tools, the tool performance has undergone tremendous changes. The main coating materials are: Tic, TiN, Ti (C, N), TiALN, ALTiN and the like. Coating technology has been applied to end mills, reamers, drills, composite hole machining tools, gear hobs, gear shaping knives, shaving knives, forming broaches and various machine-clampable inserts for high-speed machining. Different production requirements for the production of high-hardness cast iron (steel), forged steel, stainless steel, titanium alloy, nickel alloy, magnesium alloy, aluminum alloy, powder metallurgy, non-metal and other materials.

(4) Cemented carbide

Hard-bonded tools are the leading products of CNC machining tools. In some countries, more than 90% of turning tools and more than 55% of milling cutters are made of cemented carbide, and this trend is increasing. Cemented carbide can be divided into ordinary hard alloy, fine grain hard alloy and super grain hard alloy. Divided by chemical composition, it can be divided into tungsten carbide-based cemented carbide and carbon (nitrogen) titanium-based cemented carbide. Cemented carbide has excellent comprehensive properties in terms of strength, hardness, toughness and workability, and can be used for cutting of almost any material.

(5) High speed steel cutter

High-speed steel is a high-alloy tool steel with more alloying elements such as W, Mo, Cr, and V. High-speed steel tools have excellent comprehensive performance in terms of strength, toughness and workmanship. In complex tools, especially for the production of hole-cutting tools, milling cutters, threading tools, broaches, cutting tools, etc., high-speed steel still Take the dominant position.
