Recently, BMW (China) Automobile Trading Co., Ltd. and BMW Brilliance Automobile Co., Ltd. filed a recall plan with the AQSIQ according to the requirements of the Regulations on the Management of Defective Automobile Product Recall, and decided to start in China from June 18, 2014. The market recalled 232,098 vehicles equipped with N52K, N52T and N55 engines.
Crisis public relations cited criticism
According to domestic and foreign reports, BMW's engine bolt breakage in China has been in existence for a long time. The "engine camshaft bolt breakage" accident that has occurred so far has reached more than 40,000, involving BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5, X6, etc. For all models, almost all models sold by BMW in China have experienced related problems.
In the middle of last month, with the approach of Consumer Protection Rights Day 3.15, BMW Brilliance and BMW China jointly issued a statement on March 14 stating that “a comprehensive investigation and assessment of the problem of camshaft bolts has begun. Decided to prepare for the voluntary recall, the application will be submitted to the AQSIQ as soon as possible, and the details of the recall will be announced through official channels."
However, the statement lacks the scope of recall and recall time, bypassing key issues such as fault details, and is considered by the media to be a crisis public relations that is exempt from the 3.15 rights wave. The statement is not good enough.

BMW China spokesperson Jimmy Cao said that in March this year, BMW issued a statement on the official Weibo that will investigate the accident and recall the vehicle; this recall is part of the initiative, not part of a global recall.
Nearly 60% of the 232,000 vehicles are imported from BMW (China) Automobile Trading Co., Ltd., including 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, X1, X3, X5, X6, Z4 A total of 138,534 vehicles; production time is from June 10, 2009 to July 30, 2012.
The BMW 3 Series and the BMW 5 Series manufactured by BMW Brilliance totaled 93,564 units. The production time was November 7, 2009, June 6, 2013.
BMW explained that some of the vehicles within the scope of this recall are due to the design of the fixing bolts on the outer casing of the engine variable valve timing mechanism (VANOS, Variable Nockenwellensteuerung). During the operation of the engine, the fixing bolts may loosen or even break, resulting in the engine. The sealing of the variable valve timing mechanism is affected by abnormality or failure. Under certain circumstances, the engine may not be able to start or cause mechanical damage, posing a safety hazard.
BMW (China) Automobile Trading Co., Ltd. and BMW Brilliance will freely replace the fixing bolts on the engine variable valve timing mechanism for vehicles within the recall range to eliminate safety hazards.
