For the cloned bananas, only the banana buds need to be taken, and about 1 mm of cell mass is used as a culture material. In 1988, Lin Guimei, director of the Institute of Biotechnology of Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, introduced 14 excellent strains of bananas from Australia, and selected Williams B6 with high yield, thick skin, transport resistance and good appearance as the main species of clones. The cloned oceanic banana Williams quickly replaced local varieties after it was introduced. In 2002, at the Banana Reel Competition held in Pubei, Guangxi, Williams B6 produced 95.5 kilograms per plant, which was the highest national production record. At present, Williams B6 has become the largest banana plantation in the country, accounting for most of the banana industry. Most bananas sold on the market are genetically identical to Williams B6, which is a replica of the small cell cluster that year.
Following the successful cloning of bananas, in 2004, the Institute of Biotechnology of the Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences successively succeeded in the cloning of Zhangpu and cloning horseshoes, and for the first time established an industrialized production system for tissue culture of Zhangpu and horseshoe in China.
