The PHBOTTLE project, an environmental-friendly industrial project supported by the European Union, has achieved important technical progress. Researchers have developed a new technology that makes industrial wastes biodegradable and increases the added value of industrial waste. The new materials are expected to save the entire industry millions of dollars in production costs and meet consumer demand for environmentally friendly products.
This technology produces various kinds of food or non-food packaging by fermenting the waste water produced in the fruit juice production process, and taking new biodegradable materials from it. Wastewater from fruit juice contains a large amount of organic components, such as glucose, fructose, maltose and other fermentable sugars, accounting for almost 70% of the total amount of waste water. Anna, who participated in the study? Ana Valera explained: "The most important result of the research is the use of biodegradable materials to produce plastic bottles that can be extracted from deteriorating waste water."
The European Commission stated: "The waste water produced during the production of fruit juices is actually moisture and water vapour. They do not condense into liquid water. They are transparent and can effectively isolate oxygen. These properties make the material made of plastic. Packaging can effectively prevent food spoilage. If juice manufacturers use this waste to make biodegradable fruit juice filling bottles, it is environmentally friendly and economical and will be a perfect choice."
EU member states produce 67 million tons of packaging waste each year, accounting for about one-third of all municipal solid waste. In developed countries, food packaging accounts for 60% of all packaging, so food packaging has become a major source of household waste.
The PHBOTTLE project is funded by the European Union and aims to extract polyhydroxybutyrate from the waste generated during the processing of fruit and use it as a raw material for the production of new, sustainable, functional and market-competitive biodegradable material packages or other products. product.
On the one hand, using biodegradable materials to make food packaging can both reduce energy use and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. On the other hand, because of high energy consumption, wastewater treatment at food companies has always been costly, and disposal costs for sludge are not Low, so this can also reduce the company's waste disposal costs.
However, the new material itself also has its limitations. Its material is hard, it is fragile, and it is more difficult to infuse the raw material. The project will always put food safety and its quality first in the research and development of new food packaging materials, and ultimately strive to achieve a good interaction between industrial production and the environment in this industry sector.
