The production of biodiesel from rapeseed is no longer news, but have you heard of using sugar instead of oil to make isobutene, an important chemical raw material? The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Research and Promotion of Germany announced on the 19th that this technology can achieve industrial production just around the corner.
Plastics, Gasoline, Rubber... Many daily life products are inseparable from oil. With the gradual depletion of oil resources, people began to look for renewable raw materials to replace them. The Fraunhofer Center for Chemical and Biotechnology is currently working with the French Global Bioenergy company to establish a pilot plant for industrial production in Loinna, Germany, which uses sugar to produce isobutylene.
Researchers at BioEnergy Global have previously achieved sugar and isobutene conversion in the laboratory. The researchers fed the sugar to the microorganisms and produced gas isobutylene after the microorganisms "digested."
The Fraunhofer Center for Chemical Biology and Technology says that experimental industrial production is similar to the process in laboratories, that is, sugar and microbes are placed in the same fermentor to convert from sugar to isobutene, which is then separated and purified. , liquefaction, bottling. Once the test is successful, the device is expected to achieve an annual output of 100 tons of isobutylene.
The pilot project has been funded by 5.7 million euros from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The 600 square meters facility is scheduled to be completed in 2015. "We have mastered both biotechnology and chemical process technology, which has met all the prerequisites for a successful implementation project," said Geld Unklbach, director of the Fraunhofer Center for Chemical and Biotechnology.
The production of biodiesel from rapeseed has been criticized for food problems. Is it inappropriate to produce isobutene from sugar? Onkelbach said that in the future, the use of wood or straw instead of sugar beet to produce sugar will not affect the use of sugar, and the relevant biorefining technology base already exists.
